Life gets busy, and sometimes our health takes a backseat to a meeting or a grocery run. Let’s talk about why we forget and how to take the pressure off.

We have all been there.

You are halfway to the grocery store or just about to drift off to sleep when that cold, sinking feeling hits you: Did I take my pill today? You walk back to the bottle, look at it, and realize you can’t remember. You try to picture yourself swallowing it, but yesterday’s memory looks exactly like today’s.

If this is your daily reality, please hear this: Relax, you aren't being careless, and you aren't failing.

The truth is that our brains are actually wired to forget things we do every day. Think about it. Do you remember the exact moment you locked your front door this morning? Probably not. When an action becomes a "background task," your brain stops recording it as a unique event to save energy. In the medical world, we call this habituation.

Combine that with a busy morning or a change in routine, and the "memory loop" breaks. We also have a natural "present bias," where our brains prioritize immediate things, like a hot cup of tea, over "invisible" benefits like blood pressure management.

What actually works:

  • Stop relying on your memory: Your brain is for having big ideas and enjoying your family, not for being a filing cabinet. Externalize the task.

  • Forgive the slip: If you miss a dose, don't let the guilt spiral into "well, I already messed up the week." Reach out to your doctor, find out the safe way to get back on track, and start fresh.

  • The "Anchor" Trick: Place your meds next to the one thing you never forget, like your phone charger or your glasses.
